Dual Credit
What is dual credit at SOHS?
- An opportunity open to eligible students who hope to earn college credit hours during their high school schedule by taking specifically offered courses through JCTC, MSU, or EKU. These classes are taught by SOHS teachers. We also offer the option for online/asynchronous courses to be taken by juniors and seniors. These courses are taught by the faculty at the corresponding college in which the course is offered.
- These college credits will be awarded upon successful completion of courses and reflected on JCTC, MSU, or EKU transcripts. The SOHS high school transcripts will reflect the dual credit weighted course completed as well.
How is dual credit different from advanced placement?
- Dual Credit classes allow high school students to begin undergraduate college classes for credit. As long as the student passes the class, they receive credit for that class. These classes are offered through specific colleges, such as MSU, EKU, or JCTC.
- AP (Advanced Placement) classes are high school courses with college-level curriculum and exams created by the College Board. While these classes will count for high school credit, they will not always count for college credit. Typically, students must pass the AP test with a score of 3, 4, or 5 to earn college credit, but that varies from college to college.
Why participate?
- You can earn college credits.
- You get reduced tuition rates from JCTC/MSU/EKU and/or you can use your KHEAA dual credit scholarships.
- You learn the blackboard system (submit assignments, communicate with professors, monitor grades) that you will use on a college campus.
- You gain exposure to college level courses while still in high school and have the support of your SOHS community and parents/guardians.
How do these courses impact my grades and transcripts?
- Grades earned in these courses will be reflected on your high school AND college transcripts.
- All grades will stand on your college transcripts. Colleges do not offer “credit recovery.”
- These are weighted grades on your high school transcript, so successful completion has a positive effect on your GPA.
How much will these courses cost?
- These courses do have tuition and fees associated with them that are billed through the colleges (JCTC, MSU, EKU) but we can help you navigate the process. Note, these bills are sent to the student directly from the college’s bursar office, as they are the ones enrolled in the courses. SOHS does not handle any of the billing, as we do not charge for these courses.
- The exact cost will depend on how many dual credit classes you take compared to how many dual credit and work ready scholarships you use (see examples below)
- You are eligible for 1 dual credit and 2 work ready scholarships each year for eligible courses though KHEAA (note: not all courses are work ready)
- The colleges offer discounted tuition rates for dual credit students. For example, JCTC offers a discounted tuition rate of 50% for dual credit students.
